The social responsibility for businesses is an increasingly important topic. Lawyers and law firms are interested in this field under at least three perspectives: (i) as counselors for their clients on these issues; (ii) as suppliers of services to their clients, when they are asked to adhere to their clients’ code of conduct; and (iii) as businesses themselves.
The European Bar Association (CCBE) issued on February 7, 2014 “Corporate Social Responsibility for the Legal Profession” – Guidance II to provide advice and information to lawyers about corporate social responsibilities (“CSR”) for the legal profession under the three mentioned perspectives.
Although not mandatory, the Guidance provides lawyers and bar associations with useful guidelines on corporate social responsibilities, including several tips on CSR policies for the legal profession, as well as on lawyers’ liabilities while providing advice on CSR. The document also contains a checklist, which might be useful also to American law firms.
