This August, the Canadian Bar Association has issued a report titled “Futures: Transforming The Delivery Of Legal Services In Canada.”
Starting from the concept that “globalization, technology, and market liberalization” are changing the environment in which lawyers work and that lawyers must be responsive to the changed needs of their clientele, the Canadian Bar Association has issued this report to foster innovation as the key to establish “a viable, competitive, relevant and representative legal profession in Canada in the future”.
The Report recommends 22 actions, among which is the introduction of possibility of nonlawyer ownership of lawfirms, multi-disciplinary practice and fee-sharing with (and referral fees from) nonlawyers. Several recommendations also deal with the legal education.
