On November 12, 2014, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of Global Automakers issued the Consumer Privacy Protection Principles for vehicle technologies and services.
The Principles apply to the collection, use, and sharing of personal information in association with vehicles’ technologies and services available on cars and light trucks sold or leased to individual consumers for personal use in the United States.
Car companies who choose to adopt the Principles will fundamentally: (i) use transparency about how the company collects and uses consumers’ personal information; (ii) give consumers certain choices about collection and use of their personal data; (iii) use information in ways that are consistent with the context in which the data was gathered; (iv) obey to data minimization, de-identification & retention principles; (v) adopt data security measures; (vi) maintain integrity and access of consumers’ data; and (vii) ensure accountability of third entities that receive the personal information.
