On July 1, 2016, the Bermuda House of Assembly passed the Personal Information Protection Bill (PIPA).
PIPA is a “milestone in the history of human rights in Bermuda”. The Bill provides Bermuda residents with the right to have their personal information protected. It applies to all organizations, businesses and the government that process personal information, both in manual and electronic format.
PIPA requires a legitimate purpose for the use of personal information. It also details a set of privacy principles that reflect accepted internationally standards of good business practices for their use.
PIPA shall enter into force in approximately two years. In the meantime, the Privacy Commissioner will be issuing guidance and give advice to assist organizations to get ready to implement the Bill.
