Starting Feb. 12, 2015, users have a new option in their Facebook security settings: it lets them choose a legacy contact to pass their account management over when the time comes. The setting provides: “Choose a family member or close friend to care for your account if something happens to you.” Once you have chosen a family member or friend, Facebook asks you to approve a message for the person you have indicated.
Alternatively, users have two other options:
- do nothing. In this case, after adequate proof of death, Facebook will memorialize the account, freezing it as it is.
- Ask Facebook to delete account after death.
